Men who have prostate cancer need to know about all the treatment options for their stage of cancer.

For most men, a Radical Prostatectomy permanently impacts urinary and sexual function.

For patients with early-intermediate prostate cancer, HIFU Focal Therapy should be considered as an effective, minimally invasive, and low side-effect treatment option.

“The side-effects of surgery were in many respects more scary than the cancer itself. My hope is that men in my situation look at the other options that are open to them.”

Steve Wright, The Focal Therapy Clinic HIFU Patient.

How do the Outcomes of Focal Therapy Compare to Radical Prostatectomy?

Focal Therapy Compared to Radical Prostatectomy for Non-metastatic Prostate Cancer Study

A recently published study led by Imperial College London has shown that for patients with low to intermediate prostate cancer, Focal Therapy provides similar cancer control and better post-op function compared to Radical Prostatectomy.

In the study the oncological outcomes of 246 Radical Prostatectomy and 246 Focal Therapy patients were compared at 3, 5, and 8 years post-treatment.

Patients were matched according to their year of surgery, age, PSA, Gleason score, maximum cancer core length, use of neoadjuvant hormonal therapy, and T- stage.

Cancer Control

The rates of Failure-Free Survival – defined as freedom from local salvage therapy or systemic therapy or development of metastases – for the two treatments were as follows:

Functional Outcomes

The rates of erectile function* and urinary continence post treatment were as follows:

*Erectile function scores include men who did not have erectile function pre-treatment

“Traditional surgery often leaves men with long-term erectile dysfunction – four in ten patients will need a safety incontinence pad after a year and one in ten will be significantly incontinent. HIFU Focal Therapy would spare them these life-changing complications.”

Mr Tim Dudderidge, Consultant Urological Surgeon at University Hospital Southampton.
