Graham Doubtfire HIFU Prostate Cancer Patient

“I’m a fixer, and this was a problem that needed fixing”

Graham is 75 and lives in Haslemere with his wife Diane. They enjoy walking and travelling, following his action-packed career in international banking which involved living in multiple cities across the USA and Asia. As Graham puts it, he was sent on these overseas posts to fix problems needing fixing – experiences he drew on when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2015.

Seven years prior to his prostate cancer diagnosis, Graham became diabetic, and put on a regimen of controlled diet and regular checkups. It was through one of these checkups that a blood test revealed an elevated PSA, and he was monitored through his GP for several months. Seeing a sustained PSA rise, the GP referred to him to Consultant Urologist Raj Nigam.

Raj undertook an MRI of Graham’s prostate which determined a biopsy was necessary, and following these Raj gave Graham his diagnosis – early stage prostate cancer, localised within the prostate. He presented Graham with three options: Prostatectomy, partial prostatectomy or focal therapy.

Given that Graham’s prostate cancer was localised, he was a candidate for HIFU. Graham describes his discussions with Raj as something not unlike his discussions with managers and operational staff over his long career in banking. “He presented the problem logically, carefully and clearly, and suggested ways to fix it. I’m a fixer- I wanted it fixed with maximum impact and minimal hassle, and so I immediately opted for HIFU”.

Covered by AXA/PPP health insurance, Graham was able to undergo the HIFU procedure very quickly after his decision. Treatment went well and, 5 years on, he sees Raj annually for checkups.

Like many FTC patients, Graham is very aware of the “randomness” of his experience and how he has been one of the fortunate ones. His PSA test was only done because he was having regular blood tests to manage his diabetes, and his referral to Raj, a pioneer and innovator in focal therapy, was pure luck.
His prostate cancer was caught early and treatable with a non-invasive approach that maintained his quality of life.

He encourages all men to get regular PSA tests so that their chances of early diagnosis and effective treatment are maximised. “Don’t wait for symptoms – it can happen to anyone”.
