You will need regular check-ups and PSA (prostate specific antigen) blood tests after prostate cancer treatment. Usually the PSA will be first tested three months after your procedure, then at three monthly intervals for the first year.
Your GP will take over the PSA monitoring and to update your consultant with the readings. After this time, if the PSA is stable we advise the frequency of PSA monitoring be reduced to six monthly intervals for a period of two years, then at annual intervals.
After HIFU treatment, it is important that you are monitored for a minimum of 10 years by your GP and hospital. Clinical trial evidence has shown that the oncological outcomes over 8 years are similar between Focal Therapy and Radical Prostatectomy with 83% of men free of prostate cancer following HIFU Focal Therapy treatment.
We would anticipate a reduction in the PSA value after HIFU. The amount the PSA value may fall but varies from man to man and depending on how much of the prostate is left behind.
An MRI scan is done after one year and may sometimes be repeated.
You will also be monitored for any urine or erection problems and offered support or treatment, as necessary. Clinical trial evidence has shown that following HIFU Focal Therapy treatment 98% of men had no issue with urinary continence and 95% of men who had erectile function pre-treatment were able to retain normal sexual function.
If you experience any difficulties with your erections or urine symptoms, please speak to your doctor or contact your nurse specialist.
