Suitability
Our patient-centric approach focuses on finding the best prostate cancer treatment for each individual, based on both their cancer and their hopes for life after treatment.
If you have early to intermediate-stage prostate cancer that is confined to the prostate, and have a Gleason score of 7 or less, or if you are on the Active Surveillance protocol, you are likely to be suitable for focal therapy.
Our treatments: HIFU vs NanoKnife
Before you can have any focal therapy treatment, you will first need to have a consultation with one of our expert urologists.
They will use your medical information, including your diagnosis details, medical history and results of your cutting-edge mpMRI scan and biopsy to determine if either HIFU or NanoKnife is the best treatment for your prostate cancer. They will also talk you through your treatment options so that you can make an informed decision about the next steps in your care.
HIFU is usually recommended for men with early to moderate-stage cancer in the lower part of the prostate gland, which is where most prostate cancers occur. Meanwhile, NanoKnife is recommended when the cancer is in areas of the prostate that are hard to reach with HIFU. Previously, these men may not have been considered candidates for focal therapy. However, thanks to this advanced technology relying upon precision imaging and targeting, they can now benefit from this minimally-invasive treatment technique.

Side effects of HIFU and NanoKnife
Regardless of which focal therapy treatment you choose, you can rest assured that side effects shouldn’t be an issue.
The highly-targeted nature of both HIFU and NanoKnife means that in both cases, healthy tissues surrounding the prostate will be left untouched. This significantly reduces the risk of the side effects associated with conventional NHS prostate cancer treatments like hormone therapy, radiotherapy and radical prostatectomy (prostate cancer surgery).

Who decides if focal therapy is right for me?
Decisions at The Focal Therapy Clinic aren’t made by one single clinician. When you choose treatment with us, you will be supported by a multidisciplinary team (MDT) — made up of pioneers in the areas of precision diagnostics and focal therapy for the last 20 years.
Our experts will work together to ensure that the best course of action is taken for you personally. Your individual case will be subject to an MDT review where a team of three expert urologists, a radiation oncologist and a leading radiologist will assess your circumstances and confirm whether focal therapy is right for you.
Following this, your chosen consultant can create a detailed and bespoke treatment plan for you.
