Prostate cancer support
Receiving your cancer diagnosis can come as a shock, and it can be difficult to process it all. To help you understand your diagnosis and make a treatment decision, we recommend getting as much support as possible. Although it can feel like it, you are not alone.
“being a man gets in the way of being a man with prostate cancer….I’m a man. I haven’t got a clue how to communicate where I’m at..”

Friends and family
You may not have discussed your health very much with your friends and family before your diagnosis. However, 1 in 8 men will get prostate cancer, and we have found that once you share your diagnosis, you might be surprised at how many people in your life have an experience of their own to share. Hearing about other peoples’ diagnosis and treatment experience can be helpful in making your own decision.
Talking to your friends and family about your diagnosis, and your thoughts and feelings, can help you feel less alone. Lots of prostate cancer resources stress the importance of keeping physically healthy during your treatment journey, but maintaining your emotional and mental wellbeing is as important.
Charities
There are lots of charities in the UK that offer in-depth resources for people who have prostate cancer or care for someone that does. Many of them offer online information, access to call centres or specialist support and run support groups.
Different people will be helped by different kinds of support, so we suggest trying everything you can out to see what helps. Below are some which our patients and their loved ones have found helpful:
Prostate Cancer UK offers specialist nurse support, including sexual health, online resources including webinars, and support groups.
Macmillan Cancer Support have a Cancer A to Z as well as a support line that’s open 12 hours a day and available by telephone, email and website chat.
Cancer Research UK has cancer information nurses available via the telephone and their website. They also have an online forum where you can share your experiences with other people who have been affected by cancer.
It’s important to speak to a healthcare professional before you make your treatment decision, to make sure you have understood your diagnosis and your options.
